Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor) has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra (Kyliegh Curran), a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality.
Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before—at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.
2019 was a great year to be a horror and Stephen King fan. The Shining is by far a masterpiece and the film with Jack Nicholson has stood the test of time. To be honest it did seem interesting that a sequel to that classic film was to be made almost four decades later. However, we have learned not to doubt. Doctor Sleep continues the story with Dan Torrance perfectly portrayed by Ewan McGregor.
It was nice to see Danny Lloyd who originally played Dan Torrance in The Shining have a cameo in Doctor Sleep. As the viewer will learn, time doesn’t heal all wounds and sets up a fun and intriguing story here. We see Ewan’s character struggle not just with his inner demons from the past but from demons that affect a lot of people now and helped craft this story.
With the bluray release, viewers are treated to both the theatrical version as well as the three hour directors cut. While the debate can continue if a follow-up was needed, it is here and worth your time and attention.
Burbank, CA, December 19 – Dare to go back when director Mike Flanagan continues the story of Danny Torrance, 40 years after his terrifying stay at the Overlook Hotel in “The Shining” with “Doctor Sleep,” a screenplay based on the novel by Stephen King.
The Director’s Cut features nearly 30 minutes of new, alternate and extended scenes, selected by director Mike Flanagan, not seen in theaters. The Director’s Cut will be available on the Blu-ray disc and Digital in the 4K UHD Blu-ray Combo Pack and the Blu-ray editions.
The supernatural thriller “Doctor Sleep” stars Ewan McGregor (“Star Wars: Episodes I, II & III,” “Trainspotting”) as Dan Torrance, Rebecca Ferguson (the “Mission: Impossible” films, “The Greatest Showman”) as Rose the Hat and Kyliegh Curran (“I Can I Will I Did”), in her major feature film debut, as Abra. The main ensemble cast includes Carl Lumbly (TV’s “Alias,” “A Cure for Wellness”), Zahn McClarnon (“Strike One,” TV’s “Into the West”), Emily Alyn Lind (TV’s “Revenge,” “Enter the Void”), Bruce Greenwood (“Star Trek,” “I, Robot”), Jocelin Donahue (“The House of the Devil,” “Insidious: Chapter 2”), Alex Essoe (“Starry Eyes,” “House of Lies”) and Cliff Curtis (“Sunshine,” “The Dark Horse”).
Trevor Macy and Jon Berg produced the film, with Roy Lee, Scott Lumpkin, Akiva Goldsman and Kevin McCormick serving as executive producers.
Flanagan’s behind-the-scenes creative team was led by director of photography Michael Fimognari (“The Haunting of Hill House”), production designer Maher Ahmad (“Get Hard”) and costume designer Terry Anderson (“Den of Thieves”). The music score was composed by The Newton Brothers (“The Haunting of Hill House”).
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment presents, an Intrepid Pictures and Vertigo Entertainment Production, a Mike Flanagan Film, “Doctor Sleep.”
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc of “Doctor Sleep” will feature Dolby VisionTM HDR, which dramatically expands the color palette and contrast range, and uses dynamic metadata to automatically optimize the picture for every screen, frame by frame. It will also feature HDR10+TM, a new HDR technology that optimizes brightness levels and contrast for each scene, making bright areas brighter and dark areas darker to deliver a lifelike viewing experience.
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc of “Doctor Sleep” will also feature a Dolby Atmos® soundtrack remixed specifically for the home theater environment to place and move audio anywhere in the room, including overhead. To experience Dolby Atmos at home, a Dolby Atmos enabled AV receiver and additional speakers are required, or a Dolby Atmos enabled sound bar; however, Dolby Atmos soundtracks are also fully backward compatible with traditional audio configurations and legacy home entertainment equipment.
