SYNOPSIS

Arthur, who devotes himself to caring for his fragile mother, seeks out every father figure he’s never had, from wealthy businessman Thomas Wayne to TV host Murray Franklin. Caught in a cyclical existence teetering on the precipice of reality and madness, one bad decision brings about a chain reaction of escalating, ultimately deadly, events.

Let us start off by saying, Joker is NOT a family film like most comic adaptations.  This has a hard R rating for violence and language, so please keep that in mind for younger comic book fans.

One thing we have said is it would be nice to see original origin stories on some of the classic DC Universe villains.  We were delighted to hear Joker was going to actually explore his past.  It is hard to top previous Joker performances by Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, the incredible voice work of Mark Hamill and of course one of the most iconic representations from the Heath Ledger.  Please welcome Joaquin Phoenix to the mix.

This is not a prequel to any currently released Batman films.  This is an extremely dark, gritty film that shows the worst in a city and in humanity in that city.  We see Phoenix’s character decent into a darkness and evolve into Joker.  Director Todd Phillips takes us on this journey from a simple man who battles from mental illness and inadvertently brings out the worst in people.  This is an engaging story that may be hard to watch at times, yet you can’t look away.  This is very well done and Phoenix’s best performance since Walk the Line.  Joker proves when you have the right script and actors you can take any character and create something special.

Be sure to checkout the special features once it is in your collection.

Director Todd Phillips’ original, standalone origin story Joker explores the world of—and according to—Arthur Fleck. Indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix,  Arthur is a man facing the cruelty and outright scorn of society, along with the indifference of a system that allows him to spiral from vulnerability into depravity. A clown-for-hire by day, he strives to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds that the joke always seems to be on him. He’s out of tune with everyone around him, as evidenced by his uncontrollable, inappropriate laughter, which gains momentum as he attempts to contain it, exposing him to further ridicule—and even violence.

Joaquin Phoenix stars as the titular villain with Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow, Molly’s Game), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Brett Cullen (Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Barry), Douglas Hodge (Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn), and Shea Whigham (First Man).
